Francis (the deer) Visits St. Francis (the statue)

Agnes Montano

Not all Meher Baba’s guests at Meher Mount come in human form.

When my husband Juan Mendez and I were caretaking at Meher Mount, a yearling buck visited on a daily basis. He would spend most of the day leisurely resting in a spot behind the Caretaker Quarters.

Every day, around midmorning, he would quietly appear. The young buck would nibble at the plants around the Visitor Center. And then he would lay down behind the house with its back against the wall, facing a statue of St. Francis in the garden.

The yearling would stay there until late afternoon — sleeping, preening, and licking his legs.

"I am wherever My lovers are." - Avatar Meher Baba

Agnes Montano

Meher Baba’s birthday — February 25th — has always been a joyous occasion and very close to my heart.

Not only does it mark Meher Baba’s manifestation as the Avatar of this Age, but it is also a commemoration of the gift He bestowed on us by allowing us to open our hearts to His love…and to each other.

Meher Baba’s 1967 birthday message resonated with me so much because it is such a strong reminder ('“in this age of mess”) that as much as we would love to get together to celebrate His birthday, what matters the most is that we know that on February 25th and every day of our lives, He is our constant companion.

“The silence was so intense… It filled me completely.”

A young couple from nearby Santa Barbara was attending a meditation class in Ojai when someone mentioned Meher Baba and Meher Mount to them. They felt an instant urge to visit.

From the moment they arrived, they started asking questions about Meher Baba and Meher Mount. They went out to Baba’s Tree and stayed there for about an hour.

When they returned, the young man said he had felt profound silence while he was at the tree.

"This spot will be in our hearts forever."

Agnes Montano

Often, Meher Baba would send visitors just at closing time. One such case happened on a Sunday in September – the last open day of our stay at Meher Mount.

A couple showed up 15 minutes before closing time looking for a spiritual place for their marriage proposal. They wanted a private and intimate setting. It was their first time at Meher Mount, and they knew little to nothing about the place.

“So how did you choose this place?” we asked.

"It was meant for me to come here."

Visitors to Meher Mount seem to be Meher Baba’s specially invited guests. It appears that He is prompting each person at a particular moment in time to visit and strengthen their inner link to Him.

As temporary caretakers at Meher Mount in August-September 2020, we had the special opportunity to greet these visitors and share in their experiences.

"We Should Have Known It Wasn't Going to be a Smooth Ride"

Agnes Montano

Current Meher Mount caretakers Ellen Kwiatkowski and Eric Carlson didn’t have to ask twice. When they suggested we fill in for them and care for their sweet dog Oday while they were away winterizing their Blue Vista Farm in Bayfield, WI, we immediately said, “Yes.”

The plan was for former Interim Caretaker Cassandra Bramucci to cover the first week of Ellen’s and Eric’s leave, and we would take over on October 30th for another seven days.

We should have known it wasn’t going to be a smooth ride when, on the day we were set to drive up to Meher Mount from Oceanside (about 180 miles south of Ojai), we received a message from Cassandra advising us against driving up that day due to strong Santa Ana winds.
