Enjoy the Beauty of Nature

“Now, go out and see the view and try to love Baba through nature. This is all due to my love. This whole creation, this nature, all the beauty you see, all came out of me.”
-Avatar Meher Baba at Meher Mount, 1956

Savor the Views in All Directions

When you visit Meher Mount, you will see spectacular views in all directions. You can take time to relax, enjoy these views, and revel in the beauty of nature.

“I have been to Meher Mount perhaps a dozen times over the years. On each visit, Meher Baba’s beautiful presence can be felt – with each breeze coming in from the Pacific, with each sweeping view of the Channel Islands and the Topa Topa Bluffs, and with each bird visiting the feeders by the Visitor Center.”Robert Turnage

At the 2,500-foot level atop Sulphur Mountain, there is a 360-degree panorama of mountains, ocean, islands, and valleys.

When you arrive at Meher Mount, you can walk along the Ring Road (on your left) to view the beautiful Ojai Valley backed by Chief Mountain to the north.

Ahead and to the northeast, there is the 6,300-foot Topa Topa Bluffs in the Los Padres National Forest, famous for Ojai's "pink moment."

From the Visitor Center, continue on the southern path to Baba's Tree. When you look to your left to, you will see the Santa Paula Heritage Valley and the Oxnard Plains to the south. In the background are the Santa Monica Mountains.

After stopping at Baba's Tree, sit quietly at Avatar's Point and look out at the Pacific Ocean and the Channel Islands. This is an ideal spot for reflection, relaxation, and a beautiful moment to love God through nature.

On foggy days, it feels like an Asian painting as you look over the low-lying clouds to see the mountain tops and and ocean partially obscured by the mist. On a clear, bright day, you can see for miles. The vista is beautiful to behold.

Hear the Birds Sing, See them Soar Overhead

When you visit, you may be welcomed by the sounds of birds singing.

“It was just me and the ever present drama of nature. The Juncos and Goldfinches, Spotted Towhees and House Finches — all jostling for ‘spa time’ at the water fountain.”Cassandra Bramucci

Pause a moment to see the different bird species that find Meher Mount a welcome home — and a good place to stop during the migration seasons.

See the hummingbirds gather around the bird feeders near the Visitor Center. Watch the ravens cavort by the pond. Walk to Avatar’s Point to find the hawks soaring.

Because of the varied habitats, mild climate, and proximity to the ocean, Meher Mount and the Ojai Valley are a birdwatcher’s delight.  And we all become birdwatchers — if even if just for a visit.

Catch a Glimpse of the Wildlife

Meher Mount is home to — or at least at watering stop — for deer, foxes, bobcats, and even bears. Many of these denizens appear in the early morning or late evening and at different times of the year.

“These wild creatures will always reflect the essence of Meher Mount for me.”Ray Johnston

Former Caretaker Ray Johnston shared this memory, “As I looked at its nine to 10 buttons [rattles], I thought of the years I had lived at Meher Mount – essentially the same period of time as the rattlesnake. This snake which is often thought of as a dangerous predator was to me a gift. Both of us were in harmony with the land at Meher Mount and protected, with no threat to or from either of us.”

Be Delighted with the Variety of Wildflowers

Of course, spring after the winter rains is an ideal time to view the wildflowers. California is famous for its poppies in April. But many hearty varieties persist through the hotter summer months and into the fall.

“After two-and-a-half hours [on a native plant walk], my head was spinning with all the plants and flowers we were seeing. Because the oak woodland at Meher Mount is intact, our guide Rick Burgess noted that it is ‘such a great place’ for seeing native plants.”Margaret Magnus

Whenever you visit, be sure to look closely. What you may think is a ‘weed’ is a dormant native plant waiting for winter. What you think is a small purple flower may be one of several varieties of small purple flowers.

“Amidst all of Meher Mount’s grandeur there’s also a trove of tiny treasures that also remind us of Meher Baba’s message to love God through nature,” Agnes Montano reflected. There are the small organisms that adorn Meher Mount, but are mostly overlooked.

“I found not only a micro world of beauty, but also one from which you can draw inspiration,” said Agnes Montano.

Enjoy a Picnic Lunch

To spend even more time in the serene beauty of this land sanctified by Meher Baba’s physical presence, plan a picnic lunch. The Topa Topa Patio was designed to take advantage of the views of the Topa Topa Bluffs and is open to all visitors.
